The material of choice for contemporary balustrades — and the core of everything SWR does. Stainless steel balustrades are durable, low-maintenance, and aesthetically versatile: the same material works on a coastal terrace, a residential staircase, a commercial mezzanine and a glass-fronted balcony.
SWR’s stainless range covers several system types including wire infill, modular post, glass infill and handrails — each designed around a different aesthetic and application. All use the same core material: AISI304 or marine-grade AISI316 stainless steel, satin finish as standard, built to last without painting, coating or ongoing maintenance.
Wire or glass modular post systems for internal and external staircases. Open, contemporary infill that keeps the staircase feeling light. Working with you to ensure project compliance with BS 6180 and Approved Document K where applicable.
External stainless balustrades in marine-grade AISI316 for balconies, roof terraces and decking. Wire, glass or modular — all weather and corrosion resistant.
Stainless balustrade systems for mezzanines, office fit-outs, public buildings and developer projects. Supply-only or supply and install. Full specification documentation provided.
AISI316 marine-grade stainless for properties within reach of salt air — the grade that resists corrosion in the most demanding environments. Wire, glass and modular all available in AISI316.

Each system below uses stainless steel as its foundation. The difference is in what sits between the posts — wire, glass, or bar— and what application each is designed for. Pick the system that fits your project.
AISI316 marine-grade · UK’S WIDEST WIRE SYSTEM RANGE
Tensioned stainless wire rope threaded between posts — horizontal or vertical, surface-mounted or post-to-post. An aesthetic appearance, wire recedes into the background, preserving views and keeping spaces feeling open. Available in AISI304 or marine-grade AISI316. Several wire systems to suit different orientations and fixing methods.
AISI304/AISI316 GRADE · SATIN/MIRROR FINISH
Stainless post-and-infill systems assembled from standard components — no on-site welding, no specialist fabricators. Round post profiles, with wire, glass or perforated panel infill. Faster to install than bespoke welded fabrications and consistent in finish across multiple runs.
TOUGHENED OR TOUGHENED AND LAMINATED SAFETY GLASS · SPIGOT/ADAPTER/POST-MOUNT
Toughened or toughened and laminated glass panels within a stainless fixing system — spigot, adapter or post-mounted. The open look of glass with the structural performance of stainless steel hardware. Several glass systems from SWR alongside specialist branded options from ErgoSafe and OnLevel.
AISI304 or AISI316 GRADE · SATIN/MIRROR FINISH
Wall-mounted stainless handrail kits and slotted top-rail profiles systems. A complete handrail range to complement any balustrade system — or to stand alone on a staircase, ramp or corridor. Available in round tube, slotted profile and LED-integrated variants. Compliant with Approved Document K.
All SWR stainless steel systems are available in AISI304 or AISI316 grade. For most interior and sheltered exterior applications, AISI304 is the right specification. For coastal locations, pool surrounds, exposed outdoor settings or anywhere subject to salt air or high humidity, AISI316 marine-grade stainless is the correct choice.

One of SWR’s most ambitious installations to date.
Stainless steel is the dominant material for contemporary balustrades because it combines structural performance, corrosion resistance and aesthetic versatility in a way no other material matches. It doesn’t need painting or coating, doesn’t rot or corrode in standard conditions, and maintains its appearance with minimal maintenance. The satin finish works with both traditional and contemporary architecture — and the range of system types means the same material can deliver very different aesthetic results depending on the infill choice.
The stainless steel posts and fixings are the constant. What changes is the infill. Wire balustrades use tensioned wire rope between the posts — an open and view-preserving option. Modular systems use standard component posts with a choice of infill — wire, glass or perforated panel. Glass balustrades use toughened or toughened and laminated glass panels as the infill, held by stainless spigots, adapters or post-mounted clamps. Each system suits different applications and aesthetics.
Yes. AISI304-grade stainless is suitable for sheltered exterior applications. For exposed outdoor environments, coastal locations and pool surrounds, AISI316 marine-grade stainless is specified. SWR supplies both grades across all system types.
Minimal. Stainless steel doesn’t rust or corrode under normal conditions and doesn’t require painting or coating. Periodic cleaning with a specialist stainless steel cleaner keeps the finish looking its best. In coastal or high-humidity environments, more regular cleaning is recommended to remove salt deposits.
